Video Production Timelines: What You Can Expect

Timelines and deadlines. They’re critical factors in marketing, especially when you’re promoting a new product, starting a brand relaunch, or hosting an event that’s been in the works for months. So, what can you expect when it comes to your video production’s timeline?

The Video Production Timeline

The production timeline for videos is broken into three stages:

1. Pre-Production

During pre-production, the focus is on planning your project from beginning to end. That way, when you move into production and post-production, there aren’t any face-palm moments that have you re-evaluating your budget, script, or travel plans for a shoot.

The seven sateps in pre-production include:

  • Consulting
  • Scripting
  • Budgeting
  • Storyboarding
  • Graphics development
  • Location scouting
  • Talent booking

2. Production

Production is an exciting time because your project starts to come to life — and without hassle, thanks to the extensive research and planning during pre-production. The core focus of production is filming the necessary material at the designated locations, whether it’s interviews, live action, or b-roll footage.

3. Post-Production

The grand finale of the video production timeline is post-production. Here, the best footage is picked to tell your story. A few finishing touches are also added to ensure your video is the best it can be before it hits the internet’s front page.

The four tasks in post-production include:

  • Animations
  • Editing
  • Sound
  • Corrections

We wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t mention that the steps within these timelines can change between projects. That’s why your best bet is to talk with a video production company about your project’s scope, ideas, and more.

FAQs for Video Production Timelines

You’ve got questions, and we’ve got answers about video production durations. Check out the most frequently asked questions about video production timelines and our answers below:

  • Which types of video marketing take more or less time? Some kinds of video marketing do take longer than others based on their length, post-production requirements, and their style. A five-minute animated video, for instance, is an example of a project with a more extended video production timeline than a two-minute live-action branding video.
  • What factors influence the video production timeline? Tons! Your video’s duration, style, scale, and, props can all affect its schedule. Take this example of a video production timeline. Would   an animated video or a talking heads video take longer? An animated video would be our bet, but target video durations may change that.
  • How far in advance should project requests be submitted? The sooner, the better! Waiting to submit a project with a tight deadline can make it difficult to find a video production company that can make it work in that timeframe. Even if your plan isn’t complete, submit it early and your video production team can help you finish it.
  • What happens in case of project delays? We can’t speak for other video production companies, but at LAI Video, we deliver. Our team has worked several live events and created recaps for the closing ceremonies, which meant we were reviewing, compiling, and editing footage overnight to meet our client’s needs. We also produced powerful videos overnight that blew our clients away while touring the country on a bus to end childhood hunger.

While production timelines all include pre-production, production, and post-production, the steps and turnaround times for each can vary based on your project’s scale and style. If you have more questions about video production timelines at LAI Video or our open schedule for video marketing projects, contact our award-winning team today!
